At the end of it all is God, the Lord of heaven. This everyone knows. Then the prince Torlonia, master of the earth. Then come the prince’s guards. Then come the dogs guard the prince. Then nothing. Then, still nothing. Then, still nothing. Then come the peasants. And you can say that it is finished.
Ignazio Silone “Fontamara“.

This is how Ignazio Silone recounts the transformation of the heirs of the Marsi (the name comes from Mars, god of war) to ‘beginning of the twentieth century: from brave warriors to peasants. Our mission is to re-evaluate the people Marso. No longer peasant within less noble (person uncivilized manners, low intellect and base instincts, manners and rude scurrilous, regardless of social status it has.) And even the naive farmer, as soon as possible bad, but most easily mocked in his knowledge, but also as still hoped Silone transform this term (people) giving a positive value. Certainly not a warrior but proud to belong to this wonderful land and contribute to value and also to share it with all macon not those people who truly appreciate the words and not in real life and not formal. People who have the DNA aesthetic values and ethical large and likely to enjoy: the wide spaces, the intense colors, the sound of silence fundamental characteristics of our land. It ‘s absurd that everyone is talking about change and a return to a more essential and then there are towns and villages like this almost deserted and in disrepair. To summarize:

“Our mission is to identify means and ideas to promote this place as it deserves to those in the know.”

Scurcola Marsicana – Una Veduta.

SCURCOLA MARSICANA, pleasant centre in the Province of L’Aquila, of around 2,500 inhabitants, is located over the western edge of the Fucino on one side, and at the foot of Mount St. Nicholas.  It covers an area of 3,001 hectares, at an altitude of  700 m. a.s.l.  The top of the town overlooks the plain of the Palentini fields, which in ancient times formed a unique lake with the Fucino.

In the absence of historical sources, archeologists come to the rescue confirming the presence of various human settlements, dating back up to 3,500 years ago.

The name Scurcola, of Lombard origin, appears for the first time in 1150 AD, in the form “Sculcule”, as a fief of the “Da Ponte” Family. The very singular coat of arms has come down to us almost intact. It is that of the town of Scurcola, which includes the hamlet of Cappelle dei Marsi.

Fiume Imele Salto

Fiume Imele Salto

The Salto is a river of Abruzzo and Lazio and is one of the tributaries to the left of the Velino.

It originates in the Palentini plains, between the towns of Scurcola Marsicana and Magliano dei Marsi, from the confluence of the river Imele (the sources of which are near the village of Verrecchie, in Abruzzo) and the Raffia canal, and crosses the provinces of Aquila and Rieti creating the Valle del Salto, forming the lake of the same name, to finally merge into the river Velino, just before Rieti near the hamlet of Casette.

Born in the valley of Avezzano, the union of the river with Imele Raffia canal. At 540 m. it forms the lake of Salto (artificial), 10 kms long and 2 kms wide. A left tributary river of the Velino at Rieti.

Bordered in part by the Borgocollefegato-Rieti road. The province of Rieti. The right tributary: the Apa river, Rio Torto stream.

Monte San Nicola

MONTE SAN NICOLA (2012 m s.l.m.)

The Medieval castle and the archaeological site of Alba Fucens, at the foot of Mount Velino.

Alba Fucens is the most famous centre of the region that once belonged to the Equi, whose name today is identical with that of the country of Massa d’Albe, near Avezzano.
The city was founded as a Latin colony in 303 BC not far from Lake Fucino, at a point where the Via Valeria crossed an ancient path that led from Etruria up into Campania.
During the “social war” Alba Fucens remained faithful to Rome, was at the center of the fighting, and in the chronicles of the leading historians and chroniclers.
The great construction period begins in the city in the late Republican era, when Alba is largely rebuilt in accordance with rules of Hellenistic town planning.
From the third century A.D. there are signs of decline: the latest news on the city dates back to 537 AD, during the war between the Goths and the Byzantines. The systematic excavation of the city began in 1949, by a team of Belgian archeologists.
